TOOTH DECAY Is the most common chronic infectious disease in children. |
Prevention of tooth decay.
- Clean your child's teeth at least 2 times per day.
- Offer nutritious foods and limit sugar consumption.
No bottles at bedtime. No juice or pop in a bottle. Avoid frequent sugary snacks. Use water for sipping on throughout the day. Start using a cup at 10 months old.
- Avoid putting your child's hands, spoon, or pacifier in your mouth. If you have tooth decay, the bacteria can spread into their mouth.
- Visit the dentist regularly starting at age 1.
- Drink fluoridated tap water. If you do not have fluoride in your water talk to your pediatrician.
- Use fluoride toothpaste if your child is able to spit it out.
- Have fluoride varnish and dental sealants applied to protect their teeth. Sealants are usually applied on the molars at around 6 years old.

Guidelines for cleaning your child's teeth at least 2 times per day.
- If your child does not have teeth yet, wipe their gums with a clean, damp, soft cloth.
- Once they get their first teeth, start by brushing them with a small soft brush with water. Once they can spit out toothpaste, use a pea size amount of fluoride toothpaste.
- You must brush their teeth for them until they are 4-5 years old and then supervise them until they are 8 or 9 years old. Brush all sides of the teeth.
- Change their tooth brush every 3 months or sooner if the bristles are becoming bent.
- Floss their teeth everyday if their teeth are touching. They can floss their own teeth by 10 years old.
