Gun Safety

48% of Minnesotans keep a firearm in their home.  Whether you have an infant, teenager, or grandchild, keeping a gun at home poses a very real danger to your family.

Take 5 minutes now and do the following three steps:

  • Keep your gun unloaded when not in use.  This first rule of firearm safety is consistent with the National Rifle Association and National Shooting Sports Foundation.
  • Store ammunition separate from your gun.
  • Lock the gun.  Use a quality trigger lock, cable lock, gun safe, or lock box.  A desk drawer or closet shelf is not safe storage.

Even if you don't own a gun....

  • Talk with your children about the risk of gun injury outside the home in places where they may play.
  • Speak with the parents of your children's friends to find out if they keep a gun at home.
  • If they do, urge them to unload it and lock it up.
