Conservation Corps of Minnesota, Boy Scout Troops, Crow Wing
County Master Gardeners, citizens, Crow Wing Soil and Water
Conservation District (SWCD) and City of Fifty Lakes
volunteers will help plant native flowers, grasses, shrubs,
and trees into the raingarden and swale adjacent to the City
Hall parking lot. Estimated 20 volunteers will help complete
this project. Volunteers will gain hands on experience
planting a raingarden. Additional, volunteers will receive
lunch snacks provided by the City and the SWCD.
City of Fifty Lakes Raingarden is 1 of
4 demonstration projects that the SWCD will partner on
through Project Recharge, Clean Water Amendment Grant the
SWCD received in spring of 2010.
The City of Fifty Lakes raingarden will capture the
stormwater runoff created from the buildings and parking lot
about 3 acres of impervious surface. The runoff will be
directed into a 1,500 square foot raingarden and 200 foot
swale. The combination of the deep rooted plants and the
raingarden/swale will filter runoff and infiltrate the water
into the ground. This will mimic natural hydrologic
processes which will reconnect the hydrology of this area.
